plastic bags

In June 2008, the South Australian Government passed legislation to ban plastic bags.
The transition to the ban starts on  the 1st January 2009 coming to full effect on Monday 4th May 2009.

During the 4 month transition period, any retailer who still provides light weight plastic bags must also
provide alternative bags, so shoppers have a choice. Retailers will also be required to display signs
that inform customers of the change.

BANNED:

  • Thin plastic bags with handle used to carry retail good and usually supplied at supermarket check-outs and take away food outlets.
  • Made of light weight polyethylene less than 35 microns thick
  • Degradable bags(made of polyethylene) which are not compostable and do not meet the Australian Standard AS 4736-2006

NOT BANNED:

  • "bags on a roll" such as those used at vegetable and fruit stalls.
  • Heavier plastic bags used by boutiques and department stores
  • Compostable bags that meet Australian Standard AS 4736-2006
  • Green bags design for multiple use
  • Paper bags
