 Alternatives to Plastic Bags

The South Australian ban on plastic bags is now in full effect on from Monday 4th May 2009. Retailers in S.A. are not allowed to provide any banned plastic shopping bags to customers. Retailers have the discretion to provide alternative shopping bags to its customers free, or at a fee. The decision on whether to charge or how much to charge is up to the retailer.

BANNED:SA ONLY

• Thin plastic bags with handles used to carry retail goods.
• Made of lightweight polyethylene less than 35 microns thick.
• Degradable bags which are not compostable and do not meet Australian Standard  AS4736-2006.

NOT BANNED: SA ONLY

• "Bags on a roll" such as used at vegetable and fruit stalls
• Compostable bags that meet Australian standard AS4736-2006
• Paper bags
• Green or non woven reusable bags
• Heavier plastic bags used in boutiques and department stores
• Bin liners
